Story: Sleeping BeautyFlora, the baby of the family, was very used to magic making her siblings' lives miserable. Her brother Adam, for example, in a moment of pettishness, insulted an enchantress and was cursed for years--rather unfairly, Flora always thought, as her brother had been suffering a wretched toothache at the time and was really a most hospitable person. She had only been six when he was cursed and he had been one of her favorite people.Though she was accustomed to magic affecting her siblings' lives, she certainly wasn't accustomed to it affecting hers. As the baby and a princess besides, she had been rather mercilessly spoiled, lavished with attention and affection and anything she wanted. But she had an affectionate and cheerful disposition, a generous heart, and a very good brain. She was so charming and kind, had such a sweet voice, and was so wise-beyond-her-years that it was almost unfair that she was beautiful too--rosy cheeks, thick dark hair, vivid blue eyes, long lashes, and a graceful figure. But it was almost impossible not to love her, and she made so many friends with all kinds of children in and outside the palace that it was sometimes hard for her parents and nurses and governesses to keep up with them all. The only thing tempering her generally eviable disposition was a reballious streak that made her want to do things people told her not to. This came to disasterous consequences on her sixteenth birthday, when she snuck away from the lavish ball being held in her honor for a little air and, finding herself alone for the first time in her memory, decided to do what her parents had told her never to do--climbed the stairs up to the South Tower. It was full of dangerous things, weapons of war, they had said, which she was never to go near. But when she reached the top, she saw it was only full of strange contraptions with wheels and long spikes. A woman sat among them, doing something with fibers. Always intrigued by something new, Flora had talked to the old woman and found out that what she was doing was making thread. After watching for a while, Flora wanted to try. But as she reached for the spike (spindle, the woman had called it), the old woman had flicked her wrist and pricked Flora with the sharp end. Before she could cry out, Flora blacked out. Some time later she began to dream, and even be somewhat aware of what was going on around her. She sensed the maids bathing her and changing her sheets, knew when broth and water were spooned slowly down her throat. She heard her siblings around her, her parents, and her governess. As it turned out, that governess was actually her fairy godmother. For the first time she heard the true story of her christening, whispered to her by her mother. Her sleeping brain couldn't tell if it was a dream or real. One thing she knew was real was her mother asking her godmother/governess how long she would be asleep. "Could be a week, could be a hundred years," the woman said. "It depends on how long it takes for her perfect match to find her. That's all that can break the spell."It took exactly a year. On her seventeenth birthday, during one of her less-deeply-asleep periods, she heard someone come into her room. The step was unfamiliar, and she wasn't sure if she was dreaming or not. The person was breathing as if he hadbeen through a physical ordeal, and his step was heavy with a slight limp. She waited for someone to say something to him, but no one else appeared to be in the room. She sensed him come near her bed and draw the curtains back, then heard the sharp (rather flattering) intake of breath when he looked at her. She heard him sit in the chair by her bed, waited while he caught his breath, then felt him lean over her and brush his lips against hers in the softest, gentlest of kisses. She awoke as easily as from a light nap, causing the young man--for so she saw it was--to yell in shock and knock over his chair. After a stretch that felt mroe luxurious and satisfying than she had ever imagined, she promptly reached out and slapped him for having the audacity to kiss her. He was so shocked he didn't even seem to feel it. His cry had brought people running, and for a while he was forgotten in the rush of her family and friends throwing themselves around her, explanations and apologies, bringing up a feast (for Flora found herself excruciatingly hungry after a year with no real food), and testing of her muscles and health after a year asleep. Finally, after the physicians pronounced her sound as a bell, she found him and forced him to explain himself. His story was a thrilling one: the youngest son of a duke, he had come to present himself at court and seek some task or employment by which he could make his fortune. On his way he had been beset by all sorts of dangers. As he reached the palace, a witch appeared and forced him to fight. Seeking to escape, he ran into the tower's external doors and run up the stairs, finally finding himself in Flora's room. Upon seeing her he had been struck by her beauty and by the conviction that she was a kindred soul. At the same time he was pressed by the overwhelming feeling that he should do something. So he kissed her. Flora and her parents all knew what this meant. Several months passed in which Simon and Flora got to know one another and fell in love. Their marriage was announced just around the same time as all her older siblings's were. Flora is very glad to have her family whole once again, overjoyed to have her much-missed oldest brother back. She quickly became very good friends with Belle, who shares her love for books and whom Flora thinks quite a heroine.
