After the plague claimed both the lives of King Itzal and his daughter Infanta Linnet, the young Crown Prince Infante Pau was immediately crowned king, with his Queen Mother Mirelle and the former king's advisor, Sir Rodney, as co-regents. The nine-year-old was crowned King Pau I, dubbed "The Boy King" by his people.

Pau was very deeply burdened by his new and sudden position. He felt a great pressure on his shoulders to become a king as his father was, and as a result fell into a deep illness. For a while, the entire nation panicked as they contemplated the risk of his contacting the plague and who will reign in his stead. If King Pau were to die, his brother Infante Iskandar will have to reign.

Fortunately enough, King Pau recovered from his bout of malaise and returned to his office as soon as he could. He took his responsibility gravely and seriously, with help from his Queen Mother and "Sir Rory". They suggested that he become betrothed as soon as possible. Although King Pau was at first frightened with the idea, he soon agreed to comply, and was quickly betrothed to the princess of a neighbouring country, the beautiful Princess Graziella. However, as the tradition of Legato holds, both future spouses must never meet until the day of their marriage.
