Desta Mekena is a 10 year old girl from Uganda. Her mother died of AIDS just three years ago, she never knew her father and her mother's family could not care for her anymore. She has lived in the orphanage for just over two years. Desta has short dark curly hair and brown eyes. She has mild emotional issues from her life in Uganda and her mothers death. She speaks mainly Ganda, but knows a little bit of English. She enjoys math, ball games and animals.

Thomas Christian is an 8 year old boy from Auckland, New Zealand. His parents both died after a boating accident four years ago and he has lived in the orphanage for three years. He only speaks English. Thomas has brown hair and bright blue eyes. He enjoys music, animals and cooking.
