It is now 1935.
In 1933, Jack died of a sudden heart attack. The whole family was devastated by the loss of their patriarch; however, they continued on. Marie isn't really sure what to do with herself. She volunteers in town, but has no source of income. Charlie and his twins moved in with her to the big house, and Charlie gives her a portion to live off of each month.
Jonny and Angelina have struggled a little bit. People just aren't buying literature these days. Jonny has taken up repairing furniture to supplement the family's income. Rusty and JW are great little kids. They both enjoy school and get along, despite their seven year age difference.
Jamie and Elise are doing okay. They make do with much less than they used to, but they still have their farm and house. They had a third daughter in 1932. Their other children; Frannie, Jay, and Beth, are growing up fast. The kids are a bit on the wild side, but they're good kids.
Ben finally did marry. In 1934 he married a widow he met in Philadelphia. Dorit is of a Jewish-Israeli heritage. In 1930, her husband was killed in a random act of violence in the city. Since then, she has been struggling to support herself and her four children. Ben met her and was intrigued by her story. Dorit and her children have now converted to Christianity and enjoy their new freedoms with Ben as the head of their household. Despite the Depression, Ben seems to be doing well.
Rachel is having a hard time right now. In desperation, David went off to the north to find work (in 1932) and did not return--leaving Rachel with no means of support and eight children to care for. Rachel could not afford transportation for everyone back to Indiana, so she started to take whatever work she could. She hired herself as a seamstress, and now also works as a maid in the richer section of Williamsburg. Her sons Davie and Wallie went to work in a factory, but make hardly anything. Rosie watches the four youngest children, and Mikey goes to work with Rachel and works in the barn. Marie is saving all the money she can to get her daughter and children back to Indiana.
Bobby and Dorothy are still just scraping by. Bobby has taken to picking up odd jobs when he can find them, and Dorothy stretches things as far as they can go at home. Sarah and Maggie Joy are delightful little girls, and they are a great help to Dorothy.
Charlie still has not remarried, though he has tried dating several women for the sake of his children. He now works the farm full time and has become the official man of the house since Jack died. Zach and Mary are good kids and very patient. They both help out on the farm--Zach outside with Charlie and Mary inside with Marie.
Stephen and Betty Stanley got married in 1933. They have not had any children yet, but they are much too busy to really think about things like that. The pair of them travel around the country setting up aid centers and distributing what little supplies can be got to the poor.
Lizzy and David had every intention of getting married, but something happened in 1931 that changed all that. Lizzy was assaulted one night when she was out walking back from town. She got pregnant, and David accused her of having a secret boyfriend. Lizzy was heartbroken when David left, but she has since moved in with Marie and Charlie's family to nurse her wounds and raise her daughter.
When Joey turned 18, he decided to enlist in the army as a mechanic. He does a great job and doesn't really have too much of a problem supporting himself.
