Jem turned nine last month. He asked for a puppy. He's wanted a dog since he was a toddler, but Lin was nervous of becoming first-time dog owners with Jordan so young and boistrous. She wanted to wait until they were sure that all the children would be able to behave responsibly around a pet. This year, Lin and Jonas decided that they were ready and that it would make a great birthday present for Jem. Lin insisted that they get an adult dog; adjusting to having a pet in the house would be hard enough without the complications of puppyhood and they would be able to assess how the dog was with kids. For his birthday they wrapped up a food bowl and a lead. When he opened his presents he was overjoyed! They visited a nearby rescue centre that day and met some suitable dogs. Jem immediately fell in love with a lurcher called Calla, and she was really relaxed around the kids. The centre gave them some information and made sure that they were ready to adopt. A week later they brought Calla home. It's going really well; Calla sleeps in Jem's room and everyone loves her.
