One of the earliest refrences to baseball can be found in Jane Austen's early novel 'Nothanger Abbey'. Baseball is mentioned in Chapter One of that, my favorite novel, as being played by the heroine Catherine Morland who had seven brothers and as a tomboy was not quite fit for "an heroine".
Here is the quote: "...and it was not very wonderful that Catherine, who had by nature nothing heroic about her, should prefer cricket, baseball, riding on horseback, and running about the country at the age of fourteen, to books — or at least books of information...". But you are right, most girls probably would have better things to do with their time.

Hmm . . . I never knew that. I read Northanger Abbey a long time ago, but I don't really remember many of the details. That's really interesting! Thanks for the info!
