The Giardiola Family
Venice, 1410
H [42]: Lorenzo Leonardo Giardiola
W [35]: Maria Simona (Vercesi) Giardiola
S1 [17]: Luca Leonardo Giardiola
-Betrothed [14]: Salvaza Calzolai
S2 [15]: Damiano Michele Giardiola
D [12]: Pia Filippa Giardiola
S3 [10]: Andrea Taddeo Giardiola
S4 / S5 [6]: Antonio Rinaldo Giardiola / Pietro Ippolito Giardiola
S6 [2]: Nicodemo Doriano Giardiola, "Nico"
During Venice's recovery from the plague, Maria birthed yet another son, called Nico. Poor Pia is vastly outnumbered. Also, sadly, Lorenzo's father Leonardo passed away after a sudden illness. Despite having long been a grown man, Lorenzo felt his father's absence keenly - yet he knew it in no way affected his business.
Which was why he was so surprised - along with his banking allies - to see clients leaving. What better rates could they be getting? The answer, of course, is that people have switched to representatives from Siena looking to establish a Venetian foothold. It doesn't take much investigating to discover that they are backed by Eligio Zanardi, guardian of the orphaned Salvaza Calzolai who seeks to elevate his adopted daughter to her family's former status - before they were overthrown by the bankers backing Lorenzo Giardiola. And, of course, Lorenzo saw why he was doing this.
Maria pleaded with him not to sentence their son to such a fate - not to betroth him to the daughter of the man Lorenzo had killed, the daughter of a family he had helped destroy. She tried to convince him that such a union would only bring Luca misery, for surely Signorina Salvaza Calzolai would be plotting revenge! But Lorenzo was steadfast that this was the safest way to return their clients (and thus regain lost revenue), for he didn't want further bloodshed with the Calzolai descendants. Bonifazio Zanelli's replacement, Calogero Giovinazzi, drew the short straw and mediated the betrothal.
Luca, for his part, has remained tight-lipped regarding his feelings toward his future wife... whom he has not yet met.
