--DD: (5) Asa Mary ArmisteadMagdalena has married a lawyer, Thomas Whitmore. They have a daughter, Anne. Hugo is dating a gentlewoman. They’ll get married in a year and Hugo will discover how awful he is at running things, so Dorothy will run things behind the scenes. Nerina is engaged to a German gentleman, who, through a series of unlikely events, ended up in France. In a few years, after they’re married, he’ll start cheating on her until she finds out, forces him to divorce her, and later marry a much better guy.
Anna and Magnus had a daughter who died as a toddler and Ali married a playwright and they have a son and a daughter. Peter had been having writer’s block for months until he married her. She’s his inspiration. He’ll accumulate a little bit of fame and give Ali most of the credit.
Andrina married a poet, Sigmund Van Wiligen. She’ll find out she can’t have children, so they’ll adopt orphans and they’ll have a bunch of nieces and nephews. It won’t be the same, but they’ll be happy anyway.
Natalia won’t remarry or have any more kids. Larkin is her only love, and Antonio is good company, and better now that he can talk. She’s supported him pretty well, and people don’t usually insist on setting her up with other men. (And if they do insist, she’ll never let them.)
Ariane and Samuele had three more kids. And then Bertil died (he had been sick for weeks) on the same day Sarah was born. Ariane is on an emotional roller coaster- happy that Sarah is alive, sad that Bertil is dead, guilty for being happy, jealous of all the mothers whose children lived, and driven crazy by all the emotions. Samuele is just sad. He’ll never really love Sarah as much as his sons, but Ariane will learn to separate Sarah’s birth and Bertil’s death and be okay again.
Katherine died in her sleep. If she had been awake, death wouldn’t have dared come anywhere near.
Cilia has married the baker, Anders. She’s constantly covered in flour. It’s aethstetic. They have a daughter named Clara, and she’ll be perpetually covered in flour too. It’s an inherited thing.
Grace has married a farmer and had two kids, Oscar is engaged to a gentlewoman, and Joy and Augustus had two more kids.
Renata endured two more years of Kaleb’s alcoholism and violence before becoming pregnant again. And again, Kaleb stopped drinking while crossing his fingers for a boy. And again, it was a girl.
As soon as Kaleb saw baby Vera, he lost it. He started drinking more than before and hit Renata and Margaret and Henny more than before.
Vera died a week later, and Kaleb showed no sadness. Renata was devastated. And she was furious that Kaleb wasn’t. Kaleb made some remark about how worthless Vera had been, and Renata retaliated. She punched and kicked him and pounded on his chest. He just threw her out of the house, forbidding her from coming back. He divorced her and kept Henny and Margaret. They were only six and three at the time, and they didn’t really understand how bad their father was. But as they got older, they did, and they ran away a year ago. They live with their Aunt Becky and Uncle Gilead and Edmund. They’ll never see Renata again. But they’ll both get married years from now and treat their own kids much better than Kaleb treated them.
