Heidi Janessa Craft sighed as she sat down in the sand near the water. It had been a long day and she new the time she would be stranded on this island would most likely be even longer. She allowed her mind to drift, back to before the plane crash.
She had been enjoying her life as much would be expected under the circumstances. Sure, she was living with her friends' parents instead of her own. But that had been her norm for the past year almost since her parents had died. Nothing had been the same, but at least she had someone back in LA, someone she knew. She didn't really want to go live with her aunt in Sydney. If her aunt wanted her to stay with her so much, to rip her away from everything she knew and loved, why hadn't she done it right after her parents died instead of a year later?
Heidi allows a few tears to trickle down her face before she wipes at them and tells herself to stop crying. Yeah, she didn't want to go live with her aunt, but she didn't want to be stuck on some island with a bunch of random strangers either. She opens her eyes suddenly. Not all strangers. Where was Toni? She looks around for the little girl whom she had sworn to protect since the crash happened. She breaths a sigh of relief as she spots her closer to the water playing in the sand.
Antonia Grace Spearman was a seven year old sweetheart who had been sitting by Heidi on the plane. Curious as to why someone so young would be traveling by herself, Heidi had talked to her and found out that she had done it a few times before as well. Since her parents divorced and her father moved to Sydney, every six months Toni would fly out to see her father. She always had someone arranged to take care of her while she was traveling, most of the time it was a flight attendant. Heidi had felt for the girl and taken her under her wing in a way, even though she thought it would only be for the flight. Now, she was glad she decided to take care of her; Toni needed someone to be there for her while they were stuck here.
Toni sees Heidi watching her and smiles. She stands up, brushes the sand off of herself, and comes over to sit with Heidi. Toni lays her head against Heidi's shoulder. "Are we gonna be alright?" she asks softly. Heidi's throat tightens. As hard as this was for her, it had to be harder for her. This was not where she wanted to be as a 16 year old girl, there was still so much she wanted to do. But if this is what she had to do, so she could be here for Toni, she would do it. "We'll be fine," she reassures Toni as best she can.
******
Toni nods against Heidi's shoulder. She was extremely scared being here, but at least she had Heidi, like the big sister she had never had. Even though Toni had just met her, she knew she could trust Heidi. She had been really nice to her on the plane, encouraging conversation, making her feel more comfortable than the impartial flight attendants were who usually were asked to care for her during the flight. Heidi had helped her when the plane crashed, keeping her above the water because Toni didn't swim very well. If it wasn't for her, Toni was sure she would be dead right now.
Toni didn't want to, but she started crying anyway. Not loudly, just quiet tears that started running down her cheeks unexpectedly. Heidi noticed and wiped them away, pulling her into a hug. Toni smiles at her weakly.
I hope someone finds us soon, she thinks to herself.
