Adrian is a poor German immigrant and Shelley is the daughter of a inn-keeper. They met and were married in 1899, living in the cramped living quarters of a rented room in a boarding house in Boston. The boarding house is run by the blind widower Mr. Booker Stiles and his two daughters, five year old Julie and self-proclamed 19 year old spinster Rosie, who helps her father keep the boarding house.
Their first son Klaus was born in December of 1900. Rosie was the midwife.
