Mattias was an imigrant living in the same boarding house as Jen and her parents when they met; he was 20, she was fourteen. They begain to court once Jen turned fifteen and married the next year when she became pregnant.
Jenny, Matt and little Io live in the overcrowded boarding house. Matty takes jobs working at the docks and looks for more perminant work while Jen stays home with Io. It's tough to make ends meet, but they're optimistic that they'll manage.
