My column on Trey
Here is today's column. A famour Trey I would have liked to mention in the column is novelist Trey Ellis. One reason I did not is that I just couldn't find clear information on whether or not he is "Trey" on his birth certificate or whether it's a nickname for him.https://omaha.com/lifestyles/cleveland-evans-remembered-as-popular-slang-trey-continues-as-a-nickname-or-signifying-the-third/article_cfc5c70c-9fcc-11ec-90b6-b3c5fe88a13d.html

Very interesting, as usual, and very, very American! I've never seen Trey, or a reerence to it, in any other context - have you?

Well, here is an example of a Canadian hockey player called Trey:https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/270016/trey-watsonAnd although Trey obviously started in the USA and so far I don't know of examples born outside North America, I would be surprised if there were absolutely no small boys named Trey in other English-speaking countries because of the use of the name in shows like "Sex and the City" which I believe have some international exposure.

Some late 18th-early 19th century English poet/writer, maybe Charles Lamb, had a pet rabbit or hare named Tray - that spelling; that's the closest I've come. I'll try and trace the reference.
