I also remember reading that N- was a popular letter to put before the nicknames of names that began with vowels. Some are still used and some aren’t.
Examples:
Edward/Edmund - Ned
Ann - Nan, Nancy
Abigail - Nab, Nabby
John Adams had a daughter named Abigail, known as Nabby, probably to distinguish her from her mother, also named Abigail.
