Egas
The old name Egas... Anyone knows what it means? Its Spanish so a Germanic origin is hard to believe...

It's also an old Portuguese name - a very patriotic one - in usage at least since the 10th century.
Considering the Iberian Peninsula was invaded by germans after the fall of the Roman Empire, a potential Germanic origin isn't hard to believe at all. In fact, a large number of medieval Iberian names are Germanic in origin - Afonso, Gonçalo, Guiomar, Fernando, Rodrigo - and so are many modern Portugese words like "guerra" (war).
As for the exact meaning, I'm clueless. I've seen it listed as "sword" but the sources weren't too reliable.

I am thinking it may be related to "egan" and either way "eg" is for "edge of sword", but not very reliable source
