Leslie Dunkling (British name historian) wrote in 1983:
"[Polly was used in English-speaking countries] as a name in its own right since the 18th c. .. Gay gave the name to the heroine of his Beggar's Opera (1727).. Poll or Polly has been associated with 'parrot' since the 17th c."
Dunkling says he personally checks out historical evidence of name use, but also refers to older name historians. No specific reference is given for Polly.
