Not really a name thing, but the Empress Matilda-does she count as an English queen? She was the heir, declared the Lady of the English, but her people hated her and she was never crowned. And if so, was Jane the first queen of England?

No, Matilda (or of course Maud) doesn't count and, for the same reason, neither does Edward VIII - not crowned either. But then, nor was Jane. So Mary Tudor is #1 in her own right.
