"Earl and Pearl" is a bit too precious, I agree. I like the twin-name suggestions on this website -- they have something special in common, but aren't sing-songy.

I feel that every time a person is expecting a child, before they actually have to name him/her, the namer should stand at the top of the stairs (or the bottom) and yell every combination s/he can think of. When there's a concensus about the name/s THEN name the child/ren. Everybody's going to hear the child/ren's names this way until the "namee" leaves the household (as every parent can tell you from firsthand experience.)
