Which way
I was wondering if people said there middle name first instead of the first name. Kinda like instead of maria theresa I would go as Theresa, Maria.

For Jews, the order of the names have no importance, so Menachem Mendel could write his name as "Mendel Menachem", but not voluntarily to use his mn first...

Miss Claire, I've noticed that my Jewish friends seem to give mns to their daughters but not their sons. Is this just something that happens in South Africa, or is it more widespread? If anyone knows, it'll be you for sure! In your example, for instance, is Mendel what I would think of as a surname, or is it his mn?

Please excuse me, but huh? Some people prefer to be called by their middle names instead of their first names, but afaik no one says their full names middle name-first name instead of the normal first name-middle name. Some cultures write their family names first. For example, my given name is Miranda and my family name (aka "surname" or "last name") is Jackson. In Western culture, I write my name Miranda Jackson. But if I were in Japan, I would write my name Jackson Miranda.

But if I were in Japan, I would write my name Jackson Miranda. As a random note, it's not always wise to do that if you go to Japan--assuming you look the part of a Westerner. Many people there have trained themselves to recognize that American (or Canadian, in your case) = family name last, and thus, they'll call you by the name you put down first. You might end up being called Jackson, then. :)It's one of those rare moments when it's not necessarily wise to do as the Romans do.Array

Actually...I just picked a random culture who wrote their names family name-given name. I'm aware that I'd actually use Miranda Jackson if I ever went to Japan. I went with my own name in both cases just to maintain example continuity (how's that for a turn of phrase? ;-D)... and because I couldn't think of a full Japanese name off the top of my head.
