Re: Name found in Parish Records
in reply to a message by Dorothy
Onesiphorus was an early Christian mentioned in the Christian New Testament. A quick search of http://bible.gospelcom.net/bible brought up the following verses:
2 Timothy 1
15
You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16
May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.
17
On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me.
*Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary* claims that the name "Onesiphorus" means: "who brings profit".
Since Onesiphorus is obviously a Greek name, we'll have to wait until our resident Greek -- Pavlos -- signs on, to give you a more thorough etymology of that name.

Spot-on Nan, Onesiphoros is derived from ”onesis” (enjoyment, delight, profit) and “phero” (to bring). Could this be the ultimate satanic/objectivist/joie-de-vivre/etc name?
Onesiphoros and New Year's revelry...
You know, I hadn't thought of that. But, yes, Onesiphoros definitely does have Satanic connotations. :)
Hope you have fun plans for ushering in 36 Anno Satanas tonight. (Yeah, I know Walpurgis Night is supposed to be our original New Year's Eve, but over the years it's kinda gravitated to the universally celebrated Dec. 31st.)

Thanks Nan! We spent the night with some good friends and lots on Nemean wine :)
Sounds cool! John and I always have a more private celebration ;) but then we go outdoors and watch the fireworks that the neighbors' set off.

That should've been "...37 Anno Satanas tonight." :)

37?! Including me?!! : )
*Especially* including you. :)
So, Daividh. What's it going to be tonight? Champagne or Newcastle ("Nookie") Brown? :)

It was Pyramid Apricot Ale (outa Seattle), Nookie Brown, and Martini & Rossi Asti. We spent most of the evening at a showing of "Lord of the Rings" (our second time). Still a great flick! I've read the trilogy 4 times since the late 60's and have no real complaints with the movie - except maybe Lothlorien...
Had some friends over when we got back. Nothing exciting, but enjoyable. Hope yours was a good one, as well!

The two of us killed a bottle of one of our favorite sparkling wines -- Korbel Chardonnay Champagne -- and spent the evening intimately entangled. We did the "friends" thing the day before -- all of us having a fantastic Sunday morning brunch and toasting the coming New Year with mimosas and bloody marys at the Cooperage Inn. You and Jennifer really have to try that place next time you're on Long Island, Daividh.
Still have to see *Lord of the Rings* -- everyone who's seen it is telling us that they've got to go see it again. Guess this is one we're not going to wait to come out on DVD.
Pyramid Apricot Ale? That's a new one on me. Micro-brewery? I'll have to check it out. :)
