It could also be derived from the Latin "amarus", meaning 'bitter.' If that were the case, the name could have its roots in Italian, Spanish, or French, since they are all Romance languages. Bitter is "amer" (in French), "amaro" (in Italian), and "amargo" (in Spanish).
