I think its popularity is definitely related to its religious connect, at least for most people. I tend to associate Maria with Latin populations. Mary, with English. Marie with French, Creole, and Cajun. Mariah is just too Mariah Carey for me.
As a native English speaker, Mary has been ran into the ground, all the way to the very core of this planet. I don't hate it but OMG is it boring or what now?!
I think it's a tie between Marie and Maria for me. I don't really like or dislike either one. They're just kind of there, a safe bet.
