Re: Suri
Indeed one should be carefulI do not know any Persian, but I believe سوری is a Persian word...That is Arabic seen-waw-reh-farsi_yeh (the last can be replaced by alef_maksura, I believe) if you can't read the unicode...which means something red. I think it alone can mean red rose, but it may be a shortening of گلسورى (gaf-lam-seen-waw-reh-alef_maksura) for that. There is also a connection with feasting, but now I have reached the end of my ability to even parse the online dictionary! In any case, it is an Indian name of Persian origin: the most famous holder of the name was Sher Shah Suri. However, in India, it is also of Sanskrit origin from a root sUra/sUrya etc. meaning the sun, and ultimately from svar symbolizing day/light/sun/sky cognate to Greek Helios and Latin Sol. I don't think I have heard it as a given name in India, though.

It is most likely derived from the French "souris" ! nt  ·  Pavlos  ·  4/19/2006, 1:07 AM
