Could you provide more details about the name? Which culture/linguistic group does the name come from, and what gender is it?

I visited the High Museum of Art in Atlanta (which had a theme of French artists)in late 2002. When I came across a painting called Les Funérailles d'Atala, by Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson.
The art is based on the novel by French writer François René de Chateaubriand.
