Several people on here have suggested alternative meanings to the name Portia including possible derivations from the Latin porta meaning "gate," "door" or "passage," or from Latin portio meaning "share, part, portion."
Portia is a lovely name. Portia in "The Merchant of Venice" was clever, knowledgeable, loyal, and one of the strongest women in Shakespeare's works. It is certainly not a name to feel ashamed of.
