1) maybe a form of Algar (click the name!)
2) or something formed on the Germanic element ger, gar meaning "spear". What something? Maybe al (= all), or aelf (=elf)... I dunno...

The first part could be from:
'noble' - adal, æðel
'old' - eald, ald
'elf' - alfr, ælf
'all' - al
'helmet/protection' - helm
The second part is most likely:
'spear' - gar, ger
