It was probably in existence prior to the mid-20th century, but its popularity since then may be due to the fact that best friends J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.
Lewis both used the name, Tolkien for a village and
Lewis for the nickname of a talking horse.
It is far more popular in Australia than it is in the US, but in both countries it jumped out of obscurity into the charts in the 1970s. It was in Australia's top 100 in the 1980s.
