? Are you all saying that in Australia "Mahalia" is normally pronounced as MAH-lee-a? That seems like an odd pronunciation for that spelling to me. In the USA Mahalia is normally pronounced mah-HALE-yuh, with the middle syllable rhyming with "dale", as in the name of the famous gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.
I'm Australian and I know a Mahalia pronounced Mah-hale-eah
I think this is the most common pronounciation over here
Well I have only known of one person with this name a deceased aunt of a freind and she pronounced it Mah-lee-a as far as I know, I live in England
Edited to say I spoke to my freind today her aunt actually spelt her name Mahlia, so I actually dont know of anyone called Mahalia :)

I've never met anyone called Mahalia, but the closely-related Mahala is pronounced MAH-la (which is bourne out by the name it comes from, Mahlah), and it would seem logical therefore that Mahalia also did not have the middle 'a' emphasised.

Really? I've always said it mah-HAL-lee-ah, with HAL as in the name Al but with an H.
Then again, I've never heard Mahalia pronounced out loud, in reference to Ms. Jackson or otherwise. So I'm probably not a good person to consult on this matter. :-p
