Re: I still want A friend out there and know what my name means!!!
Uh, Jody doesn't mean "playful" in any language.Jody <-- Click hyperlink for meanings.I've also heard of Jody being used for boys as a pet form of Joseph, though I'm not sure how they get Jody out of Joseph.Miranda

I can help there. It's not a shortened form of Joseph as such but an elaboration of Jo/Joe via Joey with the D added for euphony. Sort of like Maire to Maile/Mary to Molly or Sarah/Sarie/Sadie.It's link to Jude/Judith is highly uncertain and no explanation for the switch of vowels has ever been put forth. Given the relative traditional obscurity of Jude/Judith compared with Joseph/Josephine/Joanna/etc. it's actually not as likely. But the myriad meanings of Joe- shortened names makes them a pain - could be '(God) shall add', 'dove', 'flowing down', 'God is salvation', 'God heals', etc. Pointing boy Jody's to Jude and girl Jody's to Judith is a thousand times easier! I can't go back in time and watch it happen but I'd put my money on Jody for a boy coming from Joey '(God) shall add' and for a girl from Joanna ('God is gracious') or Josephine (same as Joseph/Joey).But never 'playful'....out of curiousity, where did that idea come from?Devon

In England, Jodie is often used as a nickname for Judith.
Never heard of it meaning playful, though.
