Re: James Tiberius Kirk

What exactly are you interested in? More etymological details like:
- What is the Greek word behind KIRK?
- Is there an alternative explanation to that name?
- How come the name of a river became a personal name?
Or would you like to know more about the later history and us of the names mentioned?
- Why did Jacob become JAMES?
- How was the name TIBERIUS used in the Roman Empire? Has it even been used in England? In other countries?
I am sure people on this board could easily gather information of that kind - but it would help to limit the range.

According to Hanks & Hodges, Oxford Dictionary of First names, the M comes ion from "Late Latin Iacomus, a variant of Iacobus."
Mar is right about the Greek origin of KIRK: Kyriakos is the generally accepted explanation of Kirke, Kirche, church. However, there is a second theory, which is at least worth considering (even though the Grimm brothers denied it): Latin "circus," maybe because some churches were built where in earlier times e circle of rocks had stood as a place of ritual worship.
