And both Iorek and Yorik are nickname forms of George, with the -k indicating a diminutive as it does in Jack.
In the world of HDM, or in Lyra's world in HDM anyway, Denmark is a very prominent colonial power; making it a good idea to take a somewhat Danish name for a northern hero. I've no idea whether it exists and is used in modern Scandinavia, though.
