Possibly comes from the Hebrew name of unknown origin (possibly Mahalath)...was revived by 17th c. English Puritans... almost identical to the Arab name "Mahalia"...popular in the American South and the British Isles in the 19th c...also said to mean "woman" in some Native American dialects
