In a response to your previous post on this name, Seda* had suggested the name might be short for some form of Demetrius. The -iu ending in Demiu says it's likely to be Romanian. In that language, "Demetrius" is rendered Dumitru or sometimes Demetri, so Seda*s suggestion may well be the right answer.
