Have you tried looking for a book on Scottish Tartans and Heraldry in your local library? The Lord Lyons King of Arms (at least one of them) wrote a book on just that subject. You might get lucky concerning your search. BTW, I am familiar with this because I've read just such a book (can't remember the title since it's been a few years since I've been in that section. Might return there asap.)
