They're punctuation pets. Whenever someone overuses punctuation (i.e., "What does Kelly mean?????"), those punctuation marks are said to be abused. We rescue them and put them up for adoption to good homes.
P.S. My own question marks helped with my Kelly example. They were quite willing to do so for the sake of their brethren, so no punctuation was harmed in the making of this post.
