Re: what does Varinia mean???
in reply to a message by carlos
In the novel and movie *Spartacus*, Varinia is supposed to be a slave who originally came from Brittania -- but her name appears to be a Latin name, perhaps given to her by her Roman masters.
The name "Varinia" is a feminine form of the Roman nomen "Varius", and figuratively means "fickle, changeable".
In the story of Spartacus, Varinia not only proved that she was the exact opposite of the meaning of her name, but also proved that those Roman masters who had named her really didn't know at all what kind of woman she was. (Just as they had misjudged and underestimated Spartacus.)
