Re: Origin of my name

Interesting! Candus should be a male name in Latin, so let's assume it isn't Latin!
In the New Testament somewhere there's an African queen called Candace. It was pronounced CANdasee, and was actually the title of Ethiopian queens - Ethiopian for "Queen", I suppose. The usual pronunciation in English now is CANdiss, and the spelling has changed to match it - no longer Candace, but usually Candice. This sounds exactly like Candus would, so, yeah, maybe your dad's taste in names was better than his knowledge of Latin, or maybe the clerk just wrote down what she thought she heard when your birth was registered. Either way, you've got a marvellous name.
