The name Shahid (Arabic) pronounced (Shaheed) means martyr. Such a status is highly sought in the Islamic world, and often (mis)applied to "suicide bombers". It was also applied to those who died in the Iraq-Iran war and the first gulf war. At times it was "hijacked" by those who had limbs amputated- under Shari'a law, for having committed some crime or other.
