Re: Dairine pronunciation

Irish girl’s names ending in e or a are all pronounced with a lax a :Orla, Una, Sorca, Seoirse, Aine, Alice, Maire etc. The tonic accent is generally on the first syllablé So, Dairine (which happens to be my name) should be pronounced ‘da re ne, NOT day-reen (like day dream) nor de Reenah (like Marina or Karina)´ My parents were Irish speakers and they made the final syllable sound like the end of Àine ( a gn sound). Other important point: Irish phonology requires a vowel when passing from consonant to consonant. This why you hear people say laundery etc’. So Sorca should be pronounced sur-a-ka NOT sor-ka ( like sauerkraut). People who do that should be hanged drawn and quartered.
Dairine, who suffers everyday from having her name mispronounced
