Possible French roots
in reply to a message by Jackie
In French, "bois" (pronounced "bwah") means wood--either the subtance of wood or a forest. "Menue" is a past-tense form of the verb "mener" meaning "to lead." With the e at the end, it's in feminine form, so it means "led" as it would apply to a woman or an object of feminine gender. This word also led to the English word menu, meaning a guide. So it's possible this name came from a "wood guide." It's also possible the e at the end means nothing and wasn't originally derived from anything female or feminine. Hope this helps.
