Re: Can you tell me about the littleproud name
in reply to a message by Carla
As Roy found for you, the name Littleproud can be traced back to the county of Norfolk in England. In fact, according to Hanks & Hodges, this name was most strongly concentrated in the parish of Attleborough in Norfolk before the Industrial Revolution. The name is an "unflattering nickname for a person considered to be of slight worth, from Middle English littel (meaning small) + Middle English, Old French prod (meaning valiant, gallant)."-- Nanaea

Hanks & Hodges, besides being a great name for a mail-order catalog...Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges are two of the leading lexicographers of Britain and Australia respectively. Between them, they've published numerous papers and books on personal name, surname, and placename etymology. The book which I was quoting from was written by them both in a collaborative effort, published by Oxford University Press, and is titled: *A Dictionary of Surnames*. It's a fairly expensive reference tome, but if you're interested in purchasing it for yourself, you can find it here:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0192115928/qid%3D1011185963/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F0%5F1/002-1570006-6294450-- Nanaea
