According to a site dedicated to spices (http://www.theepicentre.com/Spices/cardamom.html) names for cardamon include:
Indian: chhoti elachi, e(e)lachie, ela(i)chi, illaichi
Tamil: elam
Is the Ela in question from that part of the world?

It was just a female name I heard in passing. I loved the sound and went to a few websites and found one with the definition. Oddly enough, the nationality wasn't mentioned. So, I came to this board. Thank you for such a speedy reply with the information you found!
