I am native american. I think why people would say it is offending is because those are not the actual names of the tribes. See the french gave tribes names such as Souix which I am but really we call ourselves Lakota. See Souix means Trecherous Snake atleast I was told that. Im also Appache but that was another given name. Such as Cheyanne was what they called the Algonqian tribe. Now today I think it is a matter of opinion. Ironically Im native american but I have a neice named Cheyanne :)

See because technically we live like every other American. I don't live on a reservation and Im not full blooded native american but I contain enough to be considered because My mom is Souix and English and Dutch. My Dad is Souix and Appache and German. So I contain enough but Im not full blooded.

My sister-in-law named my neice cheyanne because she thought it a beautiful name. To her it is in honor of native americans to name after. I think it is soely a matter of opinion. I don't get offended by the names because I think people just use them because they think they sound pretty. But I bet there are some native americans who would get offended. It just depends on their views and opinions.
