Moana
What do you think of the name Moana for a girl?Do you think it's going to get more popular when the Disney movie Moana comes out?

I'm Italian, and the association for me is mainly this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moana_Pozzi As porn stars go, she had a sweet, smart images, but still... plus she died at 33. Even without this association, it sounds too much like "moan".

I read on IMDB that the Disney character Moana was renamed Vaiana for the Italian dub because of the Moana Pozzi association (and the movie is going to be called Oceania). Spain also renamed her Vaiana, but that was because apparently Moana is a registered trademark in Spain.I've actually never heard of Moana Pozzi until you mentioned her. Most people in Brazil, at least in my generation, probably wouldn't recognize her.

I think it's a really pretty sounding name and I really love the meaning. Not sure if I'd use it as a name but maybe that's due to where I live and you wouldn't hear many names like that...

I adore it, it's the name of a dear friend of mine, whose father is originally from Hawaii. My friend inherited his Hawaiian/Pacific Islander genes, so the name really suits her, if that makes sense.Anyway because of that, I can only picture it on someone who is Pacific Islander in appearance, I can't picture it on say a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl. I'm not saying people shouldn't use it, it's just how I see it, because of my association. I'm sure if I actually met a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Moana, I'd soon get used to it!I know my friend is keen that her name not get too popular as a result of the film, and to be honest, I don't think it's going to see the impact that Elsa had.Funnily enough, I have a friend named Elsa, and that's her birth name (so she's not an Elisabeth nn Elsa or anything like that). Elsa isn't exactly enthralled at the impact Frozen has had on the name. With the Moana film coming out, the rest of us in our friendship group keep joking about which one of us will next see our name 'Disneyfied', although thankfully I think I'm fairly safe!!

I guess it is okay, but it is not really my style. If Ariel, Elsa, and Tiana can become more popular after their movies, I don't seen why Moana can't. I doubt that Moana would become overly popular because it is an ethnic name.

Hi !!!!I love this name since I was a teenager. It has a beautiful sound and wonderful meaning...it is so calm and relaxing...exotic but simple. And it is also the name of one of my favourite fantasy film's protagonist (Pan's Labyrinth)...I didn't know that there is a Disney film with this name...Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Didn't know there was going to be a Disney movie! But I suppose there will be an outbreak of Moana babies, until the next instant-fad-just-add-Disney name appears.Where I live, there is a retired (and emphatically male) rugby player whose nickname is Moaner, so when I saw Moana I immediately heard it like "one who complains". Not the best.

As someone who's never heard the name spoken before, all I see is "moan." I understand it's pronounced mo-AN-a, or something similar, which isn't bad.You never know, Disney may make it more popular. I always thought Elsa was a weird, ancient-sounding name and Frozen kinda changed my mind but not enough to use it. Then again, Elsa was kind of hovering in the top 1,000 (in the US at least) for years before Frozen even came out.Moana may turn out to be one of those names people have never heard of but like it the more they hear it. However, I don't think it'll be nearly as popular as Elsa. So if you want to use it, I think you're safe!

Well if the movie is going to be as big of a hit as the way overrated 'Frozen', the name probably will climb it's way onto the charts. Like how 'Elsa' climbed like 500 spots within a year or two. (Remembering correctly?)Moana I don't really care for but it's not terrible

I like it a lot, the meaning is beautiful and sounds very mature to me. I actually didn't know about the Disney movie, that's cool! I'm sure it will gain in some popularity in the west, but I don't think it's going to get a massive popularity rush like Elsa did. Elsa is a lot more identifiable by western standards, Moana is still very "weird", even if it's a new princess.

I don't like it as I'm not sure how to say it and I think it will.

As far as I can tell it is actually pronounced like "MO-ah-nah" but sounds much more like "MWA-nah", at least by Hawaiians.

Yes, that's what I thought too but at first glance it seems like Mona.
