Re: Need a name for the nickname
Mattea / Mattia - or in any other spelling variation you prefer. I would think this to be a feminine form of Matthias - a name which I rather like. Mattie is a beautiful nick name, of which I first learned from Edith Wharton's story "Ethan Frome". It is difficult not to love this character. Also, if you like, the name Mattie bears sufficient strength to stand as a real (legal) name, at least to me. I hope you let us know the name you choose. Congratulations & Best of Luck!

We're considering just using Mattie, but my husband has a name that is typically used as a nickname and he wishes he had a formal name with a little more substance so he could use it in formal situations.

I can certainly understand this. Through certain informal introductions, I sometimes use my nick name when mentioning my last name - as the two roll together so easily, but I have not always done this in formal situations; however, the older I get, the more likely I am to "formally inform informally", or if you prefer, "formerly I was more formal" (smile). I feel a unique & individual strength when I use my nick name together with my last name in formal situations. Although I've been called a fast talker anyway, I mention it quickly--and it rolls right off the tongue. Everything I've mentioned then of course defends your position to provide a formal name together with Mattie for your daughter to use at will. Best of Luck!
