Meg
After watching Disney's Hercules three times in as many days, the name Meg is really starting to grow on me.
My issue is that I don't like Megan. So I've been thinking Margaret "Meg", I don't know how else I could get to Meg without just having Meg as a full name, which I don't really want.Thoughts?
My constantly changing PNL:

Margaret "Meg" is the most obvious choice to me, besides using just Meg, which is what I like the best.

I love it, it always reminds me of the free spirited Margaret "Meg" from Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility

Margaret seems the obvious choice. I like it, and Meg and Megan, but the Thatcher association is a bit off-putting.

Yikes! I've just sprained my brain trying to imagine Prime Minister Meg Thatcher. It would fit into headlines better than Maggie - was she ever called Maggie by family and friends, or was it just the populist take on Margaret? Like the D-ch-ss of C-mbr-dg- always being Kate in the media and, apparently, Catherine everywhere else?

Other than Megara / Megaera, I'm not sure how you can achieve this unless you use Margaret or Marguerite.Personally, I really like Meg. It's one of my top two favorite nns for Margaret (the other is Daisy). My mom was Margaret (nn Margie) so I've considered using it in the past.

I have two main associations with Meg: Meg March from Little Women and Meg Griffin from Family Guy. In Meg March's case it's short for Margaret, and in Meg Griffin's case it's short for Megan. Both associations are pretty positive to me, so I do like the name.Meg can definitely work as a nickname for Margaret.

I like Margaret "Meg" a lot. I'm also a fan of Maggie or Margaret in full. I like Megan. That said, Margaret is far superior. I know one Meg and she's like 24? I think. Her real name is Meaghan (and she is convinced this is the Irish spelling of Megan). She is one of the most unpleasant people I've ever met but I'm trying not to let that ruin the name for me.

That's my daughter's name :)Margaret "Meg" She's only ever been called Meg, it fits her very well. It wasn't even my first choice for a Margaret nickname (I wanted to call her Margie!), but that was just who she was! I happen to like Megan a lot too, though. She gets called Megan often enough accidently or by people who assume that's her full name. I rarely correct them because, like I said, I like Megan a lot too. I've been thinking of starting to call her that some of the time. She's only 1 1/2, so haven't had too much exposure to people learning her name. I'm curious to see how it will go when she goes to school. So far the only "problem" I've had are people thinking I said her name was "May." If they find out her full name is Margaret usually they say "oh" in a surprised way, or they say "Oh, like in Little Women?!" Ha.

I'm trying to picture adorable little Meg being called "Margie," but I just can't! Meg fits her so well. :)

So do you say it like Mayg? I guess that would make sense for where you live. I'm trying to think of a way to type out the way I say it, and I keep thinking Egg but then I know lots of people pronounce that "ayg". Ah, I say Meg with the "e" in Fred!

I suppose so! I never would describe it that way until I really analyze it. Fred definitely has a "wider" e sound, if that makes sense. Meg does sound more like Mayg. Plus we like to drop consonants, so the g isn't terribly obvious unless I'm being intentional.

I love Margaret "Meg." I know several people of various ages by this name.

I'm happy to hear that! I haven't yet met another Margaret "Meg," just mine. Seems like most younger Margarets go by Maggie. But I know they must be out there. :)

Your Meg is the youngest one I know. I know 2-3 people around my age who are Margaret called "Meg" or "Meggie" and I've met 1-2 older women by this name.

Meg is fine crystal and Maggie is Flintstone jelly glasses.

I'm so coloured by knowing someone bearing a name! I've just known one Maggie, a fellow student in my nursing class. She was a few years older than most of us,and so very kind and helpful without being condescending.
So Maggie is a winner for me.

Am I the only one who loves Maggie? I think it's adorable. I like Flintstone jelly glasses, too.

Maggie is the name of my friend's cat, sorry! Haha. I don't think I would be able to use it on a child because of this association.

It was the name of my grandparents' dog, but I still like it for a person.

I like Maggie and Flintstone Jelly glasses :)

LOLI'm sure you're not the only one who likes Maggie, but it makes me think of a black ugly crow, I'm sure because of the word "magpie." I'd rather not drink my wine out Flintstone jelly glasses.

ha!I'm not a huge Maggie fan, but don't hate it either. I do agree that Meg sounds more sophisticated. We call our Meg "Meggie" sometimes, but not usually in public because I don't want people to think we're saying Maggie.

Well, there's Megara, I guess. Also Marguerite, but Marguerite is so beautiful I'd hate to see it knocked down to Meg. I just don't like Meg at all, the sound is unattractive, and I agree with a character in an E. L. Doctorow book I once read. The narrator was telling his mother about his new playmate Meg. His mother kind of turned up her nose at the name and he says "Well, her real name's Margaret." And the mother says "Meg is the name for a scullery maid."

I like Meg. It's the only nickname for Margaret that I do like. But while I like Meg a lot, I'm lukewarm on Margaret. That's the reason I'd never have a Margaret nn Meg. I hate nicknames used as full name but I also wouldn't use a full name I didn't love to get to a nickname that I love or like. So the question is, how do you feel about Margaret? If you don't love it, I'd give up on the idea.

Well Margaret is one of my sister's middle names, it has really lose family connections, but I do like it. I agree about using a name that you don't like to get a nickname that you like, my mum was faced with this decision with both of us and in the end she just used the nicknames as full names - its not to everyone's taste but its what she decided to do.

Meg is a sweet name. I really like Megan "Meg." Margaret is too stuffy for me personally, but it's a classic and it lends itself to the nickname Meg easily. I like Meg on its own, but if you want a full name for it, it sounds like Margaret is probably your best bet unless you don't mind using a diminutive of Margaret as a full name with Meg as the nickname. Margo / Margot "Meg" could work. I really like Margo.

Margot's on my list, I really love it, but I don't know if I love it "too" much to shorten it to Meg. Then again if I used Margaret "Meg" I wouldn't be able to use Margot anyway because having Margaret and Margot as sisters would just not work.

Margaret is one of my favorite names! And I love Meg as a nickname. :)

I don't care for Meg at all. What about Madgalena or Mahogany with Meg as a nickname?
vote up1
I did actually consider Magdalena, but I love the name Lena (LAY-nah) too, so I would be so torn as to what to shorten it to!
Mahogany is wood to me, not a name.
