If I remember right, it was quite similar to Montel, only with more shocking news topics.

You are remembering correctly.
I used to watch those all the time. I'd stay home "sick" from school sometimes when I didn't feel like going in and would rather watch shows like that instead. :-) Such academic integrity I had.
