Slighty OT
A friend of mine knows a woman named Girlie, but she lives in a Dakota Reservation so it's possible that's just a nickname for a difficult to pronounce Dakota name.

Very unlikely. This was in Southampton, England, I'd imagine nothing to do with a Dakota name! I looked it up on the Free BMD site which I sometimes use for family tree research and there are a few born after 1885 including a Girlie Florence and a Girlie Helena. The more I type it, the stranger it seems!
