What are people's opinions of the name Sebastian (middle name James)? It seems so far either people love it or hate it, when I have asked (friends, family etc) Some see it as too posh, or 'upper class' whereas others seem to see it as a beautiful name.

Well thankyou for your opinions! I'm still uncertain about it, due to the fact that whilst I love it, I don't want to name a child something which will lead to him being picked on in school, or whathave you.

Does every child with an unusual name get picked on? And Sebastian is not that unusual even in USA (among the top 100).
I don't get this fear of getting teased. Why would his friends tease him about his name? Those who don't like him might, but then they would probably tease him about something else, even if his name was Joseph or Michael.

Maybe I was just being a little paranoid, but I now how awful little children can be when it comes to some things. Sebastian isn't common in Britain - or at least the area in which I live.

I'm one of the 'hate it' crowd.
It isn't posh. It just looks like it's trying to be. It isn't fey, either, just trying. So it comes off as pretentious and effete: the name of a metrosexual, babyfaced soap opera character. A teenage girl's fantasy name, coming into its own now as the teenagers who fancied it grow up. Alas. It happens.. I know. I'm too old to like that name.
Sorry, I'm feeling really blunt. That's my opinion of the name on paper; I'm not so judgmental if you named a living breathing son that or something. It's a decent name, just rubs me the wrong way personally.

No, you're totally right. I don't personally see it but, seriously - you just described Ryan Phillippe's character Sebastian Valmont from the movie Cruel Intentions.

I think it's really nice. I do go back and forth on it, but that's because I know two young Sebastians. One's a sweet kid and the other's a pill. I think it's great with the mn James.

Sebastian James is a wonderful name.
I've loved the name Sebastian for YEARS. Since I was about 5, to be exact. lol, it was the name of my first crush. A cute little boy with fluffy brown hair and blue eyes who let me borrow his paste every day and loved giving hugs and ALWAYS said 'thank you'. And I don't see it as a 'posh' name because of him either - we both lived in a low-income neighborhood and he was one of six children in a small three bedroom house... How my little heart beated for him.
So, it's been on my list of favorites for boys ever since.
On my list of names for boys to use, should I ever have sons, it's #2:
1. Gabriel
2. Sebastian
3. Tristan

edit: I brought this up with my sister because I got all excited about it (lol, remembering my first love and all) and she brought to my attention I was also in love with a Sebastian while in high school. Obviously, he didn't leave much of an impression since he didn't come to mind but that was probably because it was more lust I felt than love. He was so HOT. Spikey dark black hair, hazel eyes, pouty lips, a DRUMMER. How I wanted him. He's not the same Sebastian though (my kindergarten love moved in 3rd grade). The high school Sebastian was also an alcoholic groupie-loving pot-head. Totally different. WOW, what a long edit.

I think Sebastion James is a very nice combo. I don't think it sounds too upper class - especially not if you use the nickname Bastion, which I love :-)

Bastion vs. Bastian.
Now, just in general both names, with my accent, end being pronounced completely different with Bastion sounds like an entirely new name not even related to Sebastian. It's closer to Sebastien, though. I personally prefer the sp. Bastian because I say Sebastian seb-ash-un so Bastian, to me, is bash-un, sometimes bash-tun. But Bastion is, to me, bas-tee-on. lol.
Not to mention, with the sp. Bastion I think of the actual word (which, honestly, wasn't even in my vocab until I started watching Little Britain lol), bastion:
1. A projecting part of a fortification.
2. A well-fortified position.
3. One that is considered similar to a defensive stronghold: You are a bastion of strength. See Synonyms at bulwark.
n 1: a group that defends a principle; "a bastion against corruption"; "the last bastion of communism" 2: a stronghold into which people could go for shelter during a battle [syn: citadel] 3: projecting part of a rampart or other fortification

let me explain:
I'm well aware of how people say it's supposed to be pronounced and that IS how I TRY to pronounce it but it COMES OUT seb-ash-un or, seb-ah-shun or seb-ah-shen. My 'ch' is SOFT. I can't help it, that's just how I speak unless I actually think about how I say a word which, honestly, who really does that?

Would never use it but like it very much. I have only known one in my lifetime and have not heard of any baby's being named this at all. So in my circles I would say it is not overly popular or trendy. I like the nn Bass.

I think Sebastian James flows very well. And Sebastian is exactly the sort of name I love. It is classic, international and handsome. And a name cannot be "too posh" imo.
Of course I am biased, Sebastian is rather popular in Sweden. I picture a dark-haired, good-looking guy ...

Nice combo. Not totally original, but sounds great together and Seb is a cool nn. What's wrong with upper class? Its not a snooty name if that is the implication.

I like it as a full name, I like mn James with it. As nn I like Seb or Sebas, I like Sebastian most with one of these nn. I don't see it as being posh. but that might be, because the name has been popular in the Netherlands for some time, while I only hear it used amongst English speaking people for the last year or so.

I absolutely hate the name Sebastian, I'm afraid. It's not that it sounds too "upper class" but that it sounds extremely nouveau-yuppie. It's the sort of name parents give their kids when they wish they were upper-class but simply aren't.
Sebastian James flows, but I can't give the combo a thumbs-up; it just feels so painfully trendy to me that I wince a little when I say it.

When I was little I used to live down the street from a boy named Sebastian. All I remember about him was that his parents would dress him up in suits and he was an annoying, prissy little boy.
I can picture Sebastian and Isabelle as siblings, and I dislike them already.

How differently I see the name from both of you. I picture Saint Sebastian with an arrow in his side. It's a name of a martyr to me, not a snob.
I'm not criticizing. My impressions are purely my own. I'm always surprised at how differently the same name can be viewed. That's what makes names interesting, I suppose.
