Re: Demeter, Demetria or Demetra?
in reply to a message by guru
I like Demeter, but I'm still not sure how to say it. I've heard various ways so often (I'm pagan so I suppose I hear it more than most people) and each person seems convinced they've got it right. I say "de-MEE-ter", but a lot of my friends say "DEH-meh-ter". But regardless, I like that one best, it seems most straightforward and I like the non-a ending actually.

I have the same issue but love the name Demeter. I love the DEH-mih-turr pronunciation and think it is the prettiest, but I don't think it is right. It is the same with Damaris. I love the da-MEHR-iss pronunciation, but it is not correct either. Pish posh, though.

well on the plus side, if a bunch of people who actually worship Demeter say it the way you like, at least you've got some back-up if someone calls you out on it!And I did not realize that that pronunciation of Damaris was not correct until you mentioned it. Oh man! I like our incorrect version better too.
