I grew up with a lot of Melissa's. As children many went by Missy. But I find that very undignified, like some generic term for girl. For exmample, "Listen here, missy." or "Hey missy." It sort of sounds like a gender specific "Hey you." Most of the Melissa's I know as adults, just go by Melissa, and don't use any nickname at all. I didn't even realize Mel was a popular nickname for Melissa. I thought of Mel as more of a nickname for Melonie.
